How to Grow Your Roots Out Gracefully

Constantly touching up your hair color can be exhausting, but thanks to stars like Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, and Gigi Hadid, you don’t have to feel guilty about delaying your next appointment. While visible re-growth is typically considered a faux pas, these celebs prove growing out your roots can actually look good.

If you’re ready to embrace your natural color, hair color guru Rita Hazan, who counts Beyoncé as one of her star clients, has a few tricks to make the growing-out phase as graceful as possible. Her first suggestion is super simple: Change up your part. Switching directions and making your part messier, she says, will make grown-in roots less severe. We also find that opting for braided hairstyles or a voluminous blowout can help camouflage any unintentional ombré.

Another easy way to hide that you're skipping your monthly touch-ups (aside from tossing on a headband) is by using a root concealer. The pro’s trusty spray-on version ($25; sephora.com) is available in five shades and stays put until your next shampoo. “It’s made out of natural pigments and has a little bit of resin in it to adhere to the hair,” Hazan tells InStyle. “You hold it 8 to 10 inches away from hair and mist it back and forth, and it covers grays or grow out.” A powdered formula like Madison’s Reed Root Touch Up ($30; madison-reed.com) will do the trick when you’re in a hurry as well.

Maintaining the health of your hair is also important when growing out your color, especially if you wash your hair every day, Hazan adds. “I suggest using a conditioning treatment like my Weekly Remedy ($42; ulta.com) once or twice a week,” she says. “It adds moisture back into hair, and helps it to become stronger, healthier and shinier.”
