Put down the matte lipstick—glossy lips are making a major comeback for fall. If you don’t believe us, check out Lupita Nyong’o’s latest beauty look for proof. Far more flattering than the sticky formulas we slathered on back in middle school, the star’s bold pout at the opening night of Eclipsed featured the perfect amount of pigment and shine.
One trick to nailing the look is to first saturate the lips with a long-wearing lip stain, Nyong’o’s makeup artist, Nick Barose, tells InStyle. For the star's big night, he swiped on Lancome’s L’Absolu Velours in Velours De Violine ($30; lancome.com). To ensure the color lasts, he suggests skipping the lip balm and getting rid of any dry, flaky patches with an exfoliating lip scrub instead. "Once it sets you can add a few coats for intensity," he says, explaining that for Nyong'o he settled on just one coat. "It’s a dark shade so using a small amount gave her a pretty pop of color."
